COO

About

a Berlin chordless quartet turning free improvisation into tight, textural chamber jazz.

Coo is a Berlin-based quartet built around the classic chordless frontline: Kai Winter on alto saxophone, Peter Czekay on trumpet, Frau Sportman on double bass, live electronics, and toys, and Sanjuro on drums. Across 16 tracks, their debut *Spiccilegia* swings between meditative texture studies and full-throttle group interplay, channeling the free jazz vocabulary of Ornette Coleman and Anthony Braxton into something distinctly their own.

The band listens hard. Czekay and Winter trade lines like a conversation, Sportman anchors the group while stepping forward as a melodic voice in her own right, and Sanjuro knows exactly when to hold back and when to drive. Reviewers have called *Spiccilegia* “the next-gen Anthony Braxton band” (Stephen Rush) and praised its “unpredictable, wide-awake group dynamic” (Stefan Pieper, nrwjazz.net). *Spiccilegia* was released as a 180-gram, 45 RPM vinyl by Tonkunstmanufaktur.
